Cloud Service Providers and Managed Service Providers: How Do They Differ?

doors

As enterprises move through digital transformation and along their cloud journeys, they engage with different providers. Two categories of providers are Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) and Managed Service Providers (MSPs). These provider types can appear similar and have some overlapping services, but they are two distinctly different things. It can be confusing to know which provider type to engage, so let’s explore what CSPs and MSPs each have to offer.

What is a Cloud Service Provider?

Cloud Service Providers provide cloud infrastructure: private and public. They offer the cloud infrastructure alone, not the services to support, monitor, and manage the infrastructure.

CSPs can also be providers of hosted cloud solutions such as software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) providers.

What is a Managed Service Provider?

Managed Service Providers can provide the same services that CSPs do, but with additional, high-level support. In other words, managed service providers offer cloud technology plus the people supporting it 24x7x365 to keep clients’ IT up and running smoothly.

Where CSP network operations centers (or NOCs) deal with suppliers, MSP NOCs (like Unitas Global’s Cloud Management Center, or CMC) are built to support enterprise IT operations. This means MSPs are well versed in meeting the needs of the enterprise and offering enterprise-level customer service. MSPs know how to communicate well with enterprise personnel.

MSPs can offer any combination of services including but not limited to:

  • Private cloud and cloud infrastructure
  • Cloud connectivity and WAN
  • IT support
  • Security
  • Disaster recovery and backups

MSPs offer high-value services to their clients.
